Our Story
Promise Youth Development Inc. (PYD), is an award-winning 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in early 2016 by Tesha Boyd, a Registered Nurse. PYD initially emerged as a mentoring program tailored for teenage girls facing the challenges of adolescence. These girls sought practical solutions and empathetic guidance to help them navigate their challenges without judgment.
In a matter of months, the all-girls mentoring group started meeting at a recreation center in an under-resourced community and experienced exponential growth. This transition enhanced the program’s visibility and attracted elementary to high school boys and girls. Consequently, the mentoring group transformed into a comprehensive youth development organization.
In September 2016, the City of Charlotte experienced civil unrest due to an officer-involved shooting of a black man, Keith Lamont Scott. The shooting traumatized the youth as it occurred within miles of their community. Without hesitation, the Founder engaged the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to discuss the impact of the incident on the youth in our program. This collaboration promoted healing and helped form authentic relationships between police officers and the youth, bridging the gap between the pair.
Today, PYD remains dedicated to inspiring minds and shaping the futures of underserved youth in Charlotte and surrounding areas.

A Proactive approach
Promise Youth Development (PYD) uses a proactive and intentional approach to youth development by implementing the 5 C’s of youth development: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring. We acknowledge the diverse needs of youth and the impact of trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on their development. As a result, our programs aim to comprehensively address the well-being of the whole child.
The core of our work promotes youth self-sufficiency, well-being, and positive youth development, regardless of background or circumstances. Each young person participating in our programs discovers a safe, nurturing environment where they can learn, develop, and thrive.

Meet THE VISIONARY
Our Founder, Mrs. Tesha Boyd, is a licensed Registered Nurse with decades of diverse nursing experience. Her remarkable career in healthcare has been defined by a steadfast dedication to servant leadership and holistic well-being. Throughout her nursing journey, Mrs. Boyd found her passion, caring for young people. She recognized the significance of addressing not only the physical health but also the emotional, social, mental, and educational needs of individuals, particularly young people.
Fueled by her passion for young people, Mrs. Boyd established Promise Youth Development Inc. Under her visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to nurturing the potential in every young person, Promise Youth Development Inc. is committed to making meaningful impacts in the community and the lives of young people.
